Hotel Lux at the Molotov
I lucked-out last night travelling back by train from Stockholm to London by way of Hamburg – getting to see Portsmouth band, Hotel Lux, at the Molotov Musikbar on the Reeperbahn.
From one listen to their 2023 album and half a live show I’d call it sophisticated pub rock: clever lyrics (“Oh you could chat me into a coma / The things that you say over and over”) backed by angular guitars and foot-stomping rhythm.
A delayed train meant we only got to hear four or five songs and the band’s failure to meet the ticket-sale threshold for free venue food meant their last song was followed by a dash outside for calories, rather than an encore. Only a bemused bass-player remained, first downing a pint while flat on his back and then entertaining the mostly German crowd with bad English jokes. Enjoyable chaos and what we did hear was enough to make me search out gigs back in London. Highly recommended.
